Arnold Janssen


Born in 1837 in Goch/German Lower Rhineland
Died in 1909 in Steyl
Beatified in 1975
Cannonized  2003

In 1875 Arnold Janssen arrived in Steyl from Germany and founded the Society of the Divine Word, known as the Divine Word Missionaries. Due to the Kulturkampf under Bismarck it was not possible to make a foundation in Germany. The first missionaries were already sent overseas from Steyl in 1879.

Helena Stollenwerk



Co-Foundress of Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters
Born in 1852 in Rollesbroich / German Eifel
Died in 1900 in Steyl
Beatified in 1995

Helena Stollenwerk co-founded the Missionary Sisters of Steyl with Arnold Janssen in 1889. In 1896 the Adoration Sisters grew from this Congregation to form the third Steyl foundation.

Died in 1908 in China
Beatified in 1975
Cannonized in 2003
One of the two first missionaries sent to China.
