Answering the call of the Holy Spirit
Answering the call of the Holy Spirit
On 19 March 2019, our Holy Spirit Community in Townsville was inaugurated on the Feast of St Joseph held by the Most Reverend Bishop of Townsville, Timothy Harris. The celebration included the Blessed Eucharist followed by a blessing of our home.
Ministry at the Women’s Correctional Centre, Townsville Prison and Pastoral Ministry at Townsville’s Public Hospital. We offer care and welcome to newly arrived migrants and refugees, working with St Vincent de Paul Society.
Our commitment in the Townsville Diocese includes a very significant and challenging Ministry on Palm Island. The Island’s population includes a relatively high concentration of Australia’s Indigenous people. Many of today’s community members are descendants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders formerly relocated from the mainland to the Island.
On Palm Island we are called to serve in diverse pastoral ministries which include making connections with women who visit the Women’s Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre; spending time with them whenever they want to chat; accepting and committing to a leading role in Parish Services, often conducting funerals and baptisms; and Liturgical Services as well as preparing the children for the Sacraments. Within the school community, one Sister has been appointed as St Michael’s School Chaplain.
Our Community is both drawn to, and challenged by, living and ministering on Palm Island. Our experiences bring us into a very different way of life, new to any we have ever known before. The greatest calls have been to be flexible, to adjust to Island time, and to be ready to learn the ways of the local Indigenous people.
